Tobey Doherty is an orphaned Irish Traveller-turned New York City "dock rat." Danny "Gorry" McGorry is a cross- dressing thief. Fleeing the brutality of the streets, the two immigrant teenagers enlist in the Union Army at the start of the American Civil War.

​As they fall in in with a regiment of gangsters, brawlers, and "b'hoys," Tobey and Gorry must battle to survive their own rowdy comrades—and, at times, each other—before they even face the Confederates. In the midst of the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, their friendship blossoms into something else entirely. Can these two misfits find love and beauty amid the ugliness of war, or will their paths lead only to battle scars and body lice?

​Jerusalem Plank Road is a book of poetry that examines the Petersburg Campaign of the American Civil War from a variety of perspectives, forming a fragmented, shuffled narrative through the hidden spaces of the past. The book is illustrated with images taken from details of photographs in the Library of Congress's Civil War collection.
